Tools!

So we're going to need tools.

If we want to build our new playground safely and properly, we're going to need the good people of this community to step forward in September and bring their tools to Build Day.

There is a list of the types of tools we will require on the Project Details part of this webpage. We will need some tools on the Thursday and Friday as well as Build Day in September (20th-22nd).

Let us know if you are able to help us out.

*******

We will reveal the new playground design soon too. Keep checking in.

Thank You for the Bottles

A peak inside the back of the Norrad's van.

Thank you to everyone who dropped off bottles and coins at the elementary school last night as well as to everyone who let us take their refundables.

A mere five volunteers and a handful of cute children drove around and almost filled the back of the Norrad's van. And it only took a couple of hours!

Imagine if we all chipped in.

There is still time to help out. You can take your refundables to Norrad's in Sussex at any time and tell them you are making a donation to the Norton Community Playground.

We want your Bottles!

We're coming for your refundables in an hour! Please help us raise money for the playground by donating your refundables to this great project.

You can also drop them off at the Norton Elementary School between 5:30 and 7:00 this evening if you would prefer.

Bingo & Bottle Drive reminder!

Just a quick reminder that there will be Bingo tonight at the Norton Legion. Doors open at 6:00pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. The more people who play, the bigger the payout! And a portion of the proceeds go towards the new playground.

*******

And don't forget that we will be having a bottle drive on Friday, July 27. You can drop off your refundables at the Norton Elementary School between 5:30pm and 7:00pm.

We need your help!

The design for the new playground is ready to be revealed. We will post the new design on the website soon so that all can see it!

We are going to need some financial support to buy all the equipment pieces (and every little bit helps!). Let Them Be Kids has offered to match all the funds we raise. That means if one hundred households each donated $25, our community would be able to buy $5000 worth of equipment! And if two hundred households gave $25 each, there would be $10,000 to go towards new equipment! And so on. You get the picture. A little can go a long, long way.

Make a donation: all money raised towards playground equipment will be matched by Let Them Be Kids, which means we are already half way to our goal.

Fundraise within your business: such as Casual Day, an office 50/50 draw, bake sale, etc.

Donate something: all donations, such as gift certificates, etc.,will go to our silent auction.

Help us on Build Day: we need a lot of help on September 22, so you could put together a build team and come out and help us build the new playground!

Happy Friday the Thirteenth!

There is no written evidence that the Friday the 13th superstition existed prior to the 19th century, and even the earliest supposed evidence is very little. In fact, there is very little mention of this superstition prior to the 20th century. It is also interesting to note that in Spanish-speaking countries it is Tuesday the 13th which is considered unlucky and that in Italian culture it is Friday the 17th which is an unlucky day.

Oh well, happy Friday the 13th all the same. Be safe. And have an enjoyable weekend (afterall, it is still FRIDAY!)

Out with the Old . . .

On Saturday, July 7, some volunteers arrived early in the morning.

Everyone helped out taking the old playground equipment apart.

We hope to find a new home for some of the equipment.

So each piece was carefully taken apart and saved.

We'll be storing the equipment for the Summer as we wait for Build Day.

The backhoe prepares to do its thing.

And up come the pieces.

Carefully saving all the nuts and bolts.

Community members working together just like we will in September.

And another structure begins to come down.

Digging out the pieces.

Carefully removing the slide.

Bye bye bridge.

This Summer the playground will receive a new landscaping layout.

Even the swings needed to be taken out.

The place will look barren this Summer, but in September we will re-build it together!

Everything loaded onto the truck.

And away it goes.
Thank you to all the volunteers who woke up early on a Saturday to prepare the playground for the Summer landscaping. And thank you to McConchie Trucking for all the help.

In 74 days our lovely community will come together to re-build the playground. What a day it is going to be!!!

Goodbye Old Playground

Yesterday a group of community volunteers helped dismantle the old Norton playground. Now we will be able to begin the landscaping and groundwork that needs to get done before September 22.

You can see some photos here.

Build A Dream

You can enter this contest once a day until July 27: www.buildadreamcontest.ca

You could win $25,000 for yourself and $25,000 for a community project of your choice (the Norton Community Playground, hint, hint).

You do need a upc code: the no purchase necessary code is 8501426204

It's worth a try. You never know, one of us might be the big winner and help out with the playground.

*******

Also, remember that tomorrow (July 7) is the demolition day for the old playground. We need to dismantle the old equipment so that it can be reused by Norton or another community. If you are able to help out, or know someone who might be interested, please meet at the Norton Elementary School at 8:00am on Saturday, July 7. You can also contact nortonplayground@gmail.com to let us know if you can make it.

Thank you Amy & Isaac McMillan

A huge thank you is in order for Amy and Isaac McMillan. They raised $100 selling homemade cotton candy on Canada Day in Norton! Way to go!

In total, we were able to raise $352.85 on Canada Day thanks to various fundraising activities. This just goes to show how easy it is for everyone to get involved and help out. So if you have any creative ideas on ways to raise some money this Summer, please do so.

2013 calendars at Scotiabank

A big thank you to the Scotiabank in Sussex is in order. They will be selling 2013 calendars of Norton Elementary School children's artwork and they have promised to match the funds. The calendars are being sold for a mere $10, however each calendar sold will allow us to have $20 to go towards the new playground! And when you think about what Let Them Be Kids is doing it actually means we will be raising $40 for every calendar purchased!

So if you are in Sussex, please stop in and purchase a calendar (or two or three: they make great gifts) and help support the new playground.
