In many communities the local playground is a hub of activity. It is where parents, grandparents, care givers, educators, and community members gather to allow their children to play and be physically active, to be outdoors, to visit and socialize with neighbours, to meet new people, and to take time away from busy schedules and relax.
Playgrounds are also a place for school children to get outside and exercise during their busy school day. A safe place where they can run, jump, yell, and be free, and yet, a school playground can be even more than just a place to run. With planning, preparation, and care, the local playground can become an outdoor classroom. A space where children experience physical education, experiment with science and math concepts, and work on building social and interpersonal skills.
A beautiful, inviting, safe playground is a symbol of community pride. It shows that residents care about children and about their community. As well, it shows a community is alive, vibrant, and active. A well maintained attractive community playground shows everyone that ours is a community that is worth taking a second look at, a community worth having a school in, a community worth investing in, and a community worth living in.
